Stuart Kauffman describes his own research here, complexity theory, a field he’s more or less inventing chapter by chapter as he explains it, and the core move is this: build simulations of networks, autocatalytic sets, chemicals bumping around and combining according to simple rules, and watch order emerge without anyone designing it in. His pitch is that the origin of life might not be the astronomical long shot everyone assumes, that self-organization does a lot of the work evolution usually gets sole credit for.
I’ll admit the prose is a little repetitive in places, he circles back to the same handful of examples more than strictly necessary, but he’s clear, genuinely clear, clear enough that I followed the peptide chemistry without a background in it, which is not nothing for a book this dense. The 2nd law of thermodynamics says everything trends toward disorder, and yet here’s all this order, ecosystems, organisms, societies, so where does it actually come from. That paradox sitting underneath the whole book is what kept me turning pages more than any single chapter’s content did.
The parts connecting biological and technological processes are the strongest stretch for me, this idea that autocatalytic sets aren’t just a biology trick but a more general pattern, one that shows up anywhere a system gets complex enough to start reinforcing itself. I found myself just sitting with some of those paragraphs, rereading them, not because they were unclear but because they were the kind of idea that needs a minute to actually land.
It’s revolutionary in its claims and a little cliched in its delivery, which is a strange combination but an honest one. Genuinely one of the more beautiful science books I’ve read in a while, even with the rough patches, and I came away thinking differently about where order comes from than I did going in.
